Cybersecurity Awareness Month: Strong Passwords

Cybersecurity seems complex, but key principles are really about people and behaviors.

""

October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month.

During October for Cybersecurity Awareness Month, the Information Security Office is highlighting security practices so you can protect your digital identity and Rice resources.

USE STRONG PASSWORDS...

Make your passwords:

Long: At least 8 characters or longer

Complex: Use upper and lowercase letters, numbers and symbols

Unique: Use a different password for each account

The easiest way to make it strong is to use a passphrase instead of a password. It is easier to remember and will be longer.

If your password is long, unique and complex, our recommendation is that you don’t need to ever change it unless it is lost, stolen, or exposed. This recommendation is backed up by the latest guidance from the National Institute of Standards and Technology.

...AND A PASSWORD MANAGER

Password managers can:

  • Store all your passwords
  • Tell you when you have weak or re-used passwords
  • Generate strong passwords for you
  • Automatically fill logins into sites and apps

Today, the truth is that you don’t have to remember your passwords. You just need to remember the one password that unlocks your password manager vault.
